The Washington Times reported Monday that the nation’s largest health care worker’s union, 1199SEIU, is backing New York state legislation that would authorize drivers licenses for immigrants who entered the country illegally.
“The union’s political director said licenses are essential to making immigrants a full part of the state’s economy,” the Washington Times wrote. What the political director fails to acknowledge, however, is that these immigrants already cheated the state’s economy by entering the United States in an illegal fashion.
If the legislation was passed, New York would become the thirteenth state to permit illegal immigrants access to a driver’s license. While the measure has support from top Democrats in the Legislature, it remains “largely unpopular with some Republican lawmakers.”
