On Tuesday, Harvard University Professor Cornel West told The Washington Examiner that former Vice President Joe Biden “needs to get off his symbolic crack pipe” or he’ll lose black voters to President Trump in the 2020 election.
According to Fox News reporter Brie Stimson, West made the comment in response to a recent tweet from President Trump. The tweet, posted Monday, criticized Biden’s involvement with the 1994 crime bill that increased prison populations.
West told The Washington Examiner that “if Trump comes out strong on criminal justice reform, he is going to get a slice of the black vote, because this is life or death.” He added, “I think Biden is going to have to take responsibility and acknowledge the contribution he made to something that was not a force for good.”
As a Bernie Sanders supporter, West has his own reasons for wanting to keep the black vote in the Democratic party. Nevertheless, West’s observations are sound and Biden should probably take the advice if he wants to avoid a political death like Hillary Clinton’s.
